With 8 tour buses and 20 semi’s, Trans-Siberian Orchestra literally lit up Rupp Arena December 1 in their annual stop here. The evening began with a TSO tradition. One dollar of each ticket sold is donated to a local charity. This year a check for $7891 was presented to Jim Richardson on behalf of the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Read the rest of this entry »

I was introduced to Jeff Dunham and his “little people in the boxes” on Sunday at Rupp Arena. I attended the Jeff Dunham: Identity Crisis Tour show knowing relatively nothing about him other than he was a ventriloquist. I’d heard of the comedian, but admit that I had never seen him perform and I knew little about the cast of colorful characters that perform with him. What a treat! Read the rest of this entry »

I am a Horror fan. My adoration for the genre began almost from birth as I was born close to Halloween, every year forcing my girlfriends to watch late night movies like Steven Spielberg’s Poltergeist, Night of the Living Dead, and John Carpenter’s The Fog during holiday themed slumber parties. There was something special about these films that I couldn’t explain then, but understand now; they are classic. The faceless shape, the hidden terror, the shambling zombie…they are fun. They are scary. And they have created a fan base no other genre can rival. Read the rest of this entry »

Does it help that Giada De Laurentiis was, as she says, born into the movie business? She seems as comfortable walking around and talking on stage with a head mic as if she had just walked into a friend’s kitchen.

Did you have any plans Friday, October 8th, at 6:15? If you were are Rupp Arena, you would have been at the biggest party in Lexington, KY and possibly the biggest party in Kentucky. Those that were privileged enough to be at Rupp Arena on Friday night witnessed a spectacular…well, spectacle. Loud music, fireworks, flames shooting into the sky and free shirts; really, there was nowhere else you should have been. Read the rest of this entry »

At 6:58 the lights went down and the music kicked in as Lee Ann Womack stepped onto the stage. She set the tone for what would begin a most incredible night of country music featuring not only Reba McEntire, performing like the star that she is, but also the King of Country Music himself, George Strait. I’d forgotten how many of our most worn-out metaphors—okay, I’ll just say it, they’re clichés—are borrowed from the circus. Those of us who hold down jobs and raise children refer to ourselves as “jugglers.” When the pressure gets really intense, we say that we’re performing a “high-wire act.” Or that we feel we’ve been “shot out of a cannon.” And at those moments when life truly feels out of control—whether in an enjoyably madcap or a borderline psychotic way—we just come right out and call it a “three-ring circus.” I could go on. I’ll try not to.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect from the American Idol Season 9 tour. Would all the performers be up on the stage at the same time singing like they were entertaining a crowd in a variety show in Gatlinburg, or would it be like watching a few acts at a festival? You’re fans of a few of them but the rest of them you don’t know much about. Turns out… it was kind of a mixture of both.
