Top 10 Rupp Arena Memories

July14

I thought it might be fun to see what everyone’s favorite memories from Rupp Arena are. We have had a TON of concerts, basketball, hockey, arena football, circuses, bull riding [I could go on forever]…, so there should be tons of memories to be had. Leave a comment with your Top 10 Rupp Arena memories. Be as specific or vague as you like, and just for kicks, we will randomly choose one of the comments and mail that person a Rupp Arena Blog tshirt. Hit the jump below to check out my own Top 10 List.

Here is my Top 10 (in no specific order):

  • First UK Game I attended after I began working for Rupp Arena
  • Seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd perform “Freebird” & “Simple Man” Live
  • Shaun Morgan of Seether & Nickelback performing a cover of “Hey Man Nice Shot” (by Filter) to a sold out crowd
  • Riding around with Mickie James (WWE Diva) all day for a blog article and interview
  • Watching the Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry & Papa Roach (three bands I like a lot) show from right next to the stage
  • Watching the Ringling Bros. elephants walk from the Cox Street parking lot to Triangle Park for an “Elephant Wash”
  • Standing right next to Nicole Kidman at the mix booth at the Keith Urban & Carrie Underwood concert
  • Seeing millions of bubbles float around in the arena during the Sugarland show (they passed out bubbles to everyone).
  • Tons of (current and former) UK players and coaches showing their support for Bill Keightly during his memorial service in the arena
  • Going to my first rock concert: Nine Inch Nails With Teeth Tour in 2006

I really Like the Sweet Sixteen games espically the fianl of last year.. WOW what a game!!
  • I went and saw Heart when I was 15. They were suppose to come on 2/14 but had to reschedule and did not come till 3/11. My friend and I moved from our seats down to the floor and we were right next to the sound stage. A guy working the sound stage saw me standing on a chair and still not being able to see since I am so short asked if I wanted to stand on the sound stage. Of course I said yes. A Rupp Security Guard came by and told me to get down, but the guy who said I could stand there waved the security guard away and said she is fine. It was such a cool show and I had a blast because of the special privilege I was given to stand on the sound stage.

going to my first concert in the 1970's to see Styx and REO Speedwagon then going again in 2006 or 2007 . Man I was really glad to see I am not the only one to get old.... :o) I even sat in the same section both times. It was a great walk down Memory Lane.
The crowd was my age it was great and the only difference there was no smoke in Rupp in the second concert I could actually see the stage with no Haze..... Te Hee

My favorite memory would be from the Nickelback concert. They were singing "Animals" and the people two rows up were dancing and dumped a whole glass of beer all over me & my brother. We laughed so hard because we knew how bad we smelled when we left the concert.

Growing up in Lexington I attend many different events in Rupp Arena, but by far hands down my favorite is the fact I meet my husband at a Tim Mcgraw concert in June of 1994.

My favorite memory was the Feb. '03 win by UK over Florida. I brought my friend to the game, and he had just moved to Kentucky from Florida. I hate Florida (naturally), and he hated the color blue. I figured the game would a sort of baptism by fire.
I noticed he was very quiet during the first half. I asked him why and he said he couldn't handle the building "moving" when the fans jumping and cheered (we were sitting in the upper arena). I had never really noticed it before, but the building does seem to come off the ground when that Big Blue crowd jumps.
Toward the end of the game he had opened up a bit and during a big play, he jumped and cheered for the Cats (he had been broken). Then he wobbled from side to side for a bit, leaned forward and rolled over about three rows of spectators. Come to find out, he has severe vertigo. It was very funny!

Going to my first concert at Rupp - Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood - circa 1997. Billy Joel/Elton John. Every Alison Krauss (+Union Station) experience. And best of all, taking my 3-year-old niece, Lauren, to Disney on Ice this spring and spoiling her rotten.

I do have several funny memories from Rupp Arena. Watching a boxing match on the big screen (this was before PPV) and my husband was the tri-state champ in arm wrestling so his friend that was with us sets up an arm wrestling match after the boxing match. Well you all know how you cuff the elbow of your opponent? I guess this guys buddy didn't ... Read Moreso they started an argument and one of my husband's buddies grabbed all the money on the table that had been bet and took off!!!! The guys were chasing us until two black belt karate friends of ours jumped in and took care of them. We never saw those guys again! Of course my fondest memories are probably watching UK basketball in the 77/78 season when they won the national title!
  • NCAA tourney a few years ago when game in Rupp ignored by the many who poured into concourse to watch VCU beat Duke.
