Our next artist to spotlight this week is Holly Williams, who just released a new album on June 16. She is daughter of Hank Williams Jr. (who is headlining Red, White & Boom!), and granddaughter of Hank Williams Sr., both of which are country music legends that have helped shape the genre into what it is today. While those are big footsteps to follow in, Holly has done a great job of making a name for herself and bringing her own unique style to her songs. While they are still considered country songs, they don’t sound much like those of her father and grandfather. Hit the jump below to see a preview of an interview that Holly had with Blender recently. Read the rest of this entry »
In the first of five features this week, that I have dubbed “Pre-Boom,” we take a look at Halfway to Hazard, a group that will be performing at Red, White & Boom! this Saturday, July 4th. Halfway to Hazard, a group from here in Kentucky, got their name because the two members always met at the halfway point between their hometowns (Hazard, KY) to practice. Hit the jump below for part of an interview with the duo. Also, stayed tuned for more Pre-Boom blog entries. One will be up each day leading up to the show. Read the rest of this entry »
For those interested, SNL (Saturday Night Live) will be running a rerun tomorrow night, June 27th at 11:30pm EST. The episode they are showing is the one where Kings of Leon were the music guest. Check it out to see them play “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody,” and get a little tease of what is to come when they hit the stage here are Rupp Arena on October 10th.
As of writing this, at 4:00pm EST on Thursday, June 25, there are now twenty two more VIP tickets that just became available for Red, White & Boom! The tickets are $98.00 each, but include parking, food, beverages, a laminate, a tshirt, and much more. Not to mention you will have a seat in the first five rows in front of the stage to see Hank Williams Jr. and the other acts on July 4th. If those are a bit pricey for you, we still have reserved seats available at $40.00 a piece. That will guarantee you a seat in front of the standing section, and behind the VIP section. Above is a clip from the Sugarland “Live on the Inside” DVD, which releases on August 4th at Walmarts everywhere. The DVD itself is all filmed from a single show, this past October 25th show at Rupp Arena! If you went to the show, or know friends that were there, then there is a good chance you will be able to pick yourself out in the crowd. Ready for the icing on the cake? The night before the DVD releases, a portion of the show will be aired on ABC primetime, during an hour-long special. So not only can you catch you and your friends (and your local arena!) on the DVD, but can see it at 8:00EST on August 3rd on ABC! If you happen to miss attending the show, then I would definitely recommend checking it out on TV at least. It was a great concert with a lot of audience participation. The Jonas Brothers kicked off their world tour this past Saturday, June 20th down at the new Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, TX. There were around 50,000 fans there to greet the trio and their openers (Honor Society and Jordin Sparks). As a special surprise to the fans, Miley Cyrus made a surprise appearance and sang “Before the Storm,” a song she collaborates with the Jonas Brothers on, which is featured on their new CD. If you want to see the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus performing, it’s nothing a quick YouTube search can’t find. The Jonas Brothers will be hitting the stage at Rupp Arena on August 23rd, and Miley Cyrus will be doing the same on November 1st.
A long time ago, in a decade far far away, Rupp Arena opened its doors for the first time with a Lawrence Welk concert on October 17th, 1976. Ever since then we have hosted a wide variety of legendary artists, hall-of-famers, and some one-hit wonders here and there as well. Using an excel document we had and various employees’ knowledge I have been able to compile a list of all the events Rupp Arena has hosted. To my amazement, we have had AC/DC here six times, Lynyrd Skynyrd seven times, KISS eight times, and hundreds of other legendary groups which plotted their course through Lexington during their heyday.
Click here to check out the Event Timeline on Rupp Arena’s website. Clicking on the year links at the top will direct you to that year in the timeline. We would love to know what events everyone has been to, so after you check it our, stop back by here and post your favorites.
Earlier this month, Kings of Leon released a music video for “Notion,” their newest single. I embedded the video below, which can be found on their site with the rest of their music videos. Check it out!
The Jonas Brothers just released their latest CD today, titled Lines, Vines and Trying Times. Their new CD is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the trio is up to lately. They will be kicking off the Jonas Brother World Tour 2009 with an appearance on the Today show Toyota Concert Series this Friday, June 19th. In addition to that they also have a new show on the Disney Channel. It seems like the Jonas Brothers are everywhere now-a-days. They will be hitting our stage at Rupp Arena on August 23rd.
