Sweet 16 2009: Day 3

March21

Day 3 of the National City/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament came to a close last night. The final day of games are underway and the state winner will be decided tonight. I have the results of the Day 3 games (who won, scores, etc.) so you can know who made it to the game going on today. Hit the jump below for Day 3 results.

Session 5 hit the ground running with an amazing game of West Jessamine (27-8) vs. Grayson County (26-6). The teams exchanged leads a few times early on, but West Jessamine ended up holding the lead for the second half. Grayson fought back hard with some well planned fouls and nicely timed three-point shots, but in the end West Jessamine was relentless and won the game 72 to Grayson’s 67. Following that game was Central (17-14) vs. Eastern (31-2). This also proved to be a solid game with both teams playing amazingly. Central pulled through with the win though and snagged 71 points to beat Eastern’s 65.

Session 6 was kicked off by the intense match of hometown team, Lexington Catholic (26-7) vs. Holmes (33-2), the runner-up from last year. Holmes once again proved how skilled and versatile they are and won the game 72 to 56. The next game was Shelby Valley (31-4) vs. Elliot County (31-2). In the previous round, Shelby Valley knocked out last year’s champ Mason County for a huge vistory. Elliot County played an impressive game and ended up winning over Shelby by scoring 75 to their 69 points.

Stay tuned for our write-up of the semifinals and finals tomorrow.
