Sweet 16 2009: Day 2

March20

Day 2 of the National City/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament has finished. Day 3 games are getting ready to start while I am writing this. I have the results of the Day 2 games (who won, scores, etc.). Hit the jump below for Day 2 results.

Session 3 kicked off with the closest and best game I have seen so far this year. It was Lexington Catholic (25-7) vs. Bowling Green (26-6), and both teams were not going home without a fight. Catholic got a fiarly early lead, but some clutch back to back 3-pointers by Bowling Green motivated them to catch up and get their own lead. Catholic caught back up just in time to send the game into overtime. Lexington Catholic took home the win with a 70 to 62 win over Bowling Green. The next game which followed that was Holmes (32-2) vs. Christian County (21-6). Holmes got a lead pretty early and held a lead all the way to victory. Christian County fought hard, but ended up coming up short against last year’s runner-up. Holmes won with 72 points to Christian County’s 61.

Session 4 showcased some returning giants to the court. The first game was Mason County (24-6) vs. Shelby Valley (30-4). Mason County was one of the favorites coming into this tourney, since they are the defending champions, winning last year’s Sweet 16 with (now UK player) Darius Miller. Perhaps one of the biggest upsets so far, the tough and skilled Shelby Valley knocked out Mason County with a victory of 51 to 44. Next on the schedule was Elliot County (30-2) vs. Anderson County (24-5). Elliot proved last year that they are a force to be recconed with. It seems as if things have not changed. Elliot County took the home the victory with 74 points to Anderson County’s 61.

Stay tuned for more recaps as Sweet 16 continues this week.
