That’s right, you read the title right, Nine Inch Nails will be coming back to Rupp Arena during Labor Day weekend of this year. There are not many details beyond the date available at this time, but you can keep stopping by the official page for the event on the Rupp Arena site. As with all Nine Inch Nails tours, Trent is the only member who stays consistent, so although there may be some of the same band members, there will also likely be some new people joining the group for this go-around. It is also safe to assume that there may be some material from the recently released Ghosts I-IV album.

One Night of Queen Photos

March 28, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

As promised the photos from One Night of Queen have been posted up on our Flickr page. There is a collection for the whole night, that contains one set of the photos that our house photographer James Crisp took, and another set with some shots I got from my seat. Below are three of the photos James took. You can tell by the angle and placement how keen his eye is in spotting great photo opportunities.

As with all the previous events, if you attended and manged to take some photos yourself then we would love to see them. Please feel free to email them to us at rupparenablog@gmail.com, email us a link to them, or leave a comment with a link to them. What, you say you were too busy dancing to take photos? Don’t fret, words are just as juicy and telling. We would love to hear of what you thought of the concert as well as any feedback about various aspects of the show. Till next time readers, hopefully this isn’t the last time we see Gary and The Works, but as they say, “the show must go on!”

One Night of Queen at the Opera House

Gary Mullen and The Works delivered on the promise made in one of the songs they cover, “We Will Rock You.” For many, One Night of Queen was new territory. People were not sure of what to think of a live band, in a building that normally houses broadway, covering one of the most well-known bands of all time. If Queen were shoes, then they would be size 25 boots, and those are some big shoes to fill (see what I did there?). It is definitely not easy to live up to the legend of the band, or the lead singer Freddie Mercury, so you can understand why people were dipping their toe in the water to test it out. Not a single person in the crowd went home disappointed. If you came with low expectations then you were blown away, if you came with high expectations then you were still ‘WOW’ed.

One Night of Queen 1

I had the extreme pleasure of getting to sit down with and interview the lead singer of the show, Gary Mullen. He definitely had plenty of interesting things to say (as you could imagine) about cities he had been to before, shows they had done, and inspiration for various moves he does on stage. Listen in on the interview and get a little insight into Gary’s life.

Click to listen, or right click and select “Save As” to download.

Of course whenever I attend something, I bring along a camera that may as well be permanently grafted to my hand. I managed to snap quite a few shots from my seat which will give you a taste of what the show looked like. We also had a house photographer on hand who I am sure got some UH-MAY-ZING photos of the show from a variety of places around the theater. Those photos as well as mine will be uploaded to our Flickr account soon where you can browse through them. In the meantime, here are some photos I captured from the audience.

One Night of Queen 4

The show was amazing, and even though some people were not as energetic at first since they were taking it all in, everyone was on their feet begging for more by the end of the show. All the songs got a great reception, but some of the really popular Queen songs made the crowd go wild, such as We Are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust, Fat Bottomed Girls, and Bohemian Rhapsody to name a few. Gary did an amazing job of keeping the audience involved throughout the night. He had stage-side chats with everyone between songs and got the audience to sing sections of some of the songs. The crowd returned the enthusiasm when they encored by stamping their feet then clapping. It was an intense moment to have the lights out with everyone stomping and clapping in unison, only to see a light shine on drummer sitting on his stool. As the crowd continued, the drummer, Jonathan Evans, started wailing on the drums, matching the crowd’s beat. The other band members all found their way back on stage with Gary holding an American flag as a cape. It truely was a powerful experience.

One Night of Queen 5

Lots of thanks and admiration goes out to Gary Mullen and The Works (Davie Brockett on guitar, Billy Moffat on bass guitar, Martin Campbell on keyboards, and Jonathan Evans on drums) for an amazing performance. They are picking up steam and getting more and more recognized and popular around the world. Rightly so since they seem to be the only group that can give a true tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time, Queen. Stay tuned for more photos from the show as they are linked to here, and added up to our Flickr site. Hopefully this won’t be the last time we see Gary and The Works, and maybe we can get more than one night of them some time in the future.

Sweet 16 Finals Recap

March 26, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

The National City Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Tournament came to a close this past Saturday night in Rupp Arena, and we couldn’t have asked for a better game to end it all. Mason County and Holmes fought hard until the very end, and proved why each of them made it to the finals to begin with. Before the game began, a video montage was played on the four LED screen around the arena that recapped some of the highlights from the previous days as well as built hype and anticipation for the final game. Thanks to Joseph Lloyd, our Video Event Technician, I was able to get a copy of that montage and put it up on Youtube (and thus on this blog). Kick back and watch an excellent recap of this years Sweet 16.

I was able to attend the finals on Saturday night and of course took some pictures. Here are a couple below that you can have a look at. I must say that having watched Mason County play most of their games, they definitely deserved to win the whole thing. Their players are all extremely skilled, co-ordinated, and graceful. You rarely see that level of basketball played in high school, but they definitely raised the bar high. Here are a couple photos I took, one of which shows just a sampling of how crazy and packed the crowd was.

For more in-your-face action shots, we had one of our house photographers, James Crisp, on hand with a steady hand and quick shutter finger who captured some great action from the game as well as celebration and the group shot afterward. Have a look!

If you were able to go to any of the games Wednesday through Saturday and took some photos then we would love to see them. Please send them along to rupparenablog@gmail.com and we can add them to the fan section of our Flickr site.

Sweet 16 08 - Day 2 Recap

March 21, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

The second day of the National City Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament concluded last night. There were some upsets, some great games overall, and an amazing game to top off the night. Here are the results from yesterday’s games. Click on the bracket to go to the official LIVE bracket that updates throughout the day during the tournament.

Day 2 Results

I attended both games last night and was especially excited and impressed with Mason County vs Elliot County. Both teams came into the game with excellent records from their regular season this year. Mason County got the lead and kept it by about 4 to 8 points up until half time, with Elliot County right on their tail. Shortly after the second half of the game started, Elliot County was able to make a few crucial plays and overtake Mason County for the lead. After that point, the game went back and worth with no team leading the other by more than about 6 points. Near the end, there was a 2 point difference and a clutch free-throw opportunity that could mean the difference between either team winning, or going into overtime. Both shots were made which put Mason County ahead by two possessions, and led to their victory. Below are a few photos I captured of the fans for both teams and the score board right before the free-throws.

James Crisp, one of our house photographers, was able to attend and capture photos from all the game. There are great photos of each match-up of the day. Take a look at some of the great shots James was able to get from the arena floor.

Stay tuned for for the rest of the tournaments. Each day I will be recapping what went on and likely attending a few of the games. There are also a few side articles/videos that may pop up either today or during the final day of the tournament, tomorrow.

Interview with Julian Tackett - KHSAA Assistant Commissioner

March 20, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

We are right in the thick of Sweet 16 right now at Rupp Arena. Schools of all colors are scattered about the stands like wild flowers in a field. Julian Tackett, the Assistant Commissioner at KHSAA, definitely has his work cut out for him, but fortunately he seems to have a passion for what he does. I was able to ask Julian a few questions pertaining to the National City Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament that is going on at the arena right now. Below is our one on one, which will give you some insight into his love for the tournament.

Julian Tackett

Rupp Arena Blog - What unique quality does high school basketball offer that no other level of the sport has?

Julian - It is still the last truly amateur level of play. Playing for the glory of your school, for the memories, not money or fame.

Rupp Arena Blog - What aspect of the KHSAA Sweet 16 tournament do you enjoy the most?

Julian - The reunion/social aspect of the whole thing. First day or so you see people spend more time getting reacquainted than watching the games.

Rupp Arena Blog - It really is amazing that all the teams competing are all located within a reasonable distance from each other. Does this make the rivalries, as well as the intensity of close matches that much more thrilling?

Julian - It does. plus the fact that the better teams play each other through the year through invitational tournaments, summer play, etc., continues to develop stronger rivalries and makes the games more exciting.

Newspaper

Rupp Arena Blog - From cheering for your team when you were in high school, to being a part of running the state basketball tournament each year, how do you think your outlook on the importance of Sweet 16 has changed?

Julian - The Sweet 16 is not just a series of games. It is a huge special event in the state. Everyone who is anyone in Kentucky will come through those turnstiles this weekend, and my job is to make sure that they leave here thinking this year’s experience was just a little better than the last one.

Rupp Arena Blog - Along that same subject, what is the most nostalgic moment of the tournament that reminds you of when you were that age?

Julian - It still amazes me to see the kid’s reaction to Rupp. Players who are supposed “stars” in their schools, etc. who come out in awe of the place, taking pictures with cell phones, digital pics of each other, etc., taking that first shot on the floor. It is quite a moment to watch.

Rupp Arena Blog - If you could pass along one piece of advice to high school athletes as they enter college sports, what would it be?

Julian - You never get a second chance to live this particular moment. Don’t always spend your time worrying about tomorrow’s game, next year’s classes, etc. Live and enjoy this moment to the fullest. Spend a few minutes and walk around the facility. See people. Soak it in. After you leave high school, life goes by very very fast.

Thanks Julian for the interview and it is easy to say that you are not the only one that finds so much enjoyment in this experience. It seems that no matter how many of these tournaments people go to, year after year, there is always fresh faces and talent sure to “wow” and amaze.

Hundreds of goals and millions of sneaker marks later, the first day of the National City Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament has come to an end. There were some upsets, some close games, and some amazing moments that your average fan may not expect from high school players. Here are the results from todays games. Click on the bracket to go to the official LIVE bracket that updates throughout the day during the tournament.

Day One Bracket

I was lucky enough to be on the floor for the first game of the day, University Heights versus Lexington Catholic. There were plenty of great moments in each half. The first half it seemed like Lexington Catholic was going to run away with the game and win by a wide margin. The second half of the game, University Heights stormed back and gave Lexington Catholic a run for their money. Although Lex-Cath did end up snagging the victory, they definitely had to work for it every step of the way. Below are a few photos I captured from the intense game.

While I was only at the first game, our house photographer, James Crisp, was present for every one and delivered on some amazing photos from all the games that day. In the meantime, take a look at some of the great shots James was able to get.

Office Abroad

March 19, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

Matt at the Box Office

Each time around this year, Kentuckians grin wide since March means lots of basketball. More basketball is never a bad thing, in fact, too much basketball would be a problem most of us would look forward to. Of course there is the NCAA tournament, as well as the NIT for some teams, but nothing gets crazier at Rupp Arena than Sweet 16 week where the best high school teams from around Kentucky match wits and skill on the same planks of wood that UK Basketball plays on. Little did you know, a good amount of workers for those games are actually people from the offices of the Lexington Center.

Tom Ushering

Since most ushers, concession stand workers, and box office employees have other day jobs, high school games during the day put a bit of a strain on the amount of people available to work. To make up for a lack of man-power, nearly all the employees from the offices at the Lexington Center (which includes Rupp Arena, Lexington Convention Center, Shop at Lexington Center, and the Lexington Opera House) volunteer to help out in various ways around the arena. Paper pushers are turned into ticket sellers, marketing directors may find themselves as ushers, and secretaries may be selling you your hot dog and coke. It is ‘all hands on deck’ at Rupp Arena. The workers actually enjoy the change-of-pace and get to test drive other jobs they may not know about otherwise.

Jill Selling Tickets

There are still three and a half days left of Sweet 16, so plenty of games for anyone to check out. When you are looking around, take note of the office workers abroad and take it easy on them if they seem a little new to things. It is because they are.

Fight, for the Blue and White

March 13, 2008 by Paul Hooper · 1 Comment

This past Sunday was UK’s last game of the regular season. Since it also happen to be our last home game of the season, it was Senior Day! That’s right, UK fans everywhere gave a proper farewell to Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford at center court prior to the night’s game. Not only did the fans show their support, but a video played of Randolph Morris wishing them well, and their former teammate Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics presented them with their jerseys.

Joe Crawford

It is fair to say that the team wanted to return the appreciation to the fans and planned to end the season on a good note. Early in the game, Florida lead by 9 points while Kentucky was busy playing catch up. Once we caught up though, we took it all by storm. Around half time, the scores were very close with Kentucky leading by only 2 points. After a nice rest, they stormed back on the court and swept up the Gators by going on a 15-0 point run and getting the lead by a good margin. Near the end of the game, Florida was able to catch up some and make Kentucky earn the victory. Below is a quick clip I took from the sidelines of the fans getting into the game and ‘backseat’ reffing from their seats.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WEOMoqh6w8]

For some photos from court-side, check out our Senior Day set on our Flick page. For more stats on the game, be sure to check out the Box Score and Play-by-Play on the UK Athletics site. While you are over there, you can read their recap of the game for more detail on each play as well as more specifics about the stats of each player.

People Behind the Curtain

March 12, 2008 by Paul Hooper · Leave a Comment

Although the Wizard of Oz was great and powerful, perhaps he misspoke when he said “pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” With productions of the scale that take place in Rupp Arena, perhaps it is the ‘people behind the curtain’ who should be given the most attention (except for the event itself of course). When you go to an event keeping the video production in mind, it can seem almost daunting at the amount of well edited videos that are displayed on the LED screens. As a good example, take note of the eRUPPtion Montage I posted up yesterday. Numerous montages like that are made for nearly every event that happens at Rupp Arena (be it a basketball game, concert, truck pull, etc.).

Each event definitely has it’s fair share of video production, but compared to a UK Basketball game, all our other events fall short. Of course that should not discredit the amount of work that goes into each show at Rupp Arena, but is more to emphasizing the amount of video production that goes into a single basketball game. This past Sunday, during Senior Day for UK Basketball, I was able to step inside the video production room and take some photos and a short video. Below is a clip from during the game where there are many tasks being done without a hiccup by our experienced crew.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxtC5Jg_uwQ]

It is one thing to have to produce a bunch of videos for an event and play them in the right order. It is another thing entirely to have to capture and play video on-the-fly, switching between multiple cameras, and getting the best shot for a particular situation. On top of that, there are trivia, montages and replays that have to be done and inserted into the gaps during the game. Not only is this done once, but for every UK Basketball game, men and women. That is a total of twenty-five times just this season.

Video Production Booth

To get a better sense of being in the room and seeing all the action happen, as well as the many knobs, switches and buttons that I strategically avoided to prevent meltdown, have a look at the Video Production Room set on our Flickr page. There are quite a few shots there for you to feast your eyes on. Next time you attend an event at Rupp Arena, pay attention to the many elements that go into that show. Who knows, if you like the event a lot, maybe you can treat the video production crew to a hotdog from the concessions stand.
